When you hear the name Alan Rickman there are some really noticeable movies that come to mind. His acting style was really unique and distinguished him. Most of you, especially younger people most probably know him from his role as professor Snape in the Harry Potter series, however there is more to this great actor’s impressive career than that.
Born February 21 in 1946 in West London, Rickman joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1978. He made his big appearance in American cinemas with the blockbuster Die Hard, where he acted as terrorist Hans Gruber. Since then he got credits in major projects which elevated his fame and career. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
This Robin Hood movie did pretty well at the box-office, even though critics trashed it. Maybe its predecessor Dances With Wolves set the standards very high. Kevin Costner won 7 academy awards for it, but didn’t meet the expectations for this one. Alan Rickman played the evil sheriff of Nottingham and for his passionate and eccentric performance, was the only one who got good reviews. Moreover, he won a BAFTA for best supporting actor.
Love Actually (2003)
Love Actually has now become a festive movie. It is for many a favorite Christmas classic, as it can be enjoyed by all in a good December afternoon. Alan Rickman plays an unsympathetic character. He is a husband and a father of two, who falls for a younger woman from his work. Emma Thomson puts up a very good performance as his wife too, as they both carry the story throughout.
Sweeney Todd (2007)
The Stephen Sondheim musical caused a sensation on Broadway in 1979. Finally, after some 30 years made it to the big screen. Additionally, Tim Burton took on the demanding task and created a beautiful dark, well shot film starring Johnny Depp as the evil barber and Alan Rickman as the evil judge from whom Todd is looking to avenge, as the later imprisoned him on false charges. Another amazing performance by Rickman on his own style.
Die Hard (1988)
After an impressive career on the British stage, this was Rickman’s breakthrough to the movie industry. He plays the leader of a terrorist organization in a film which established Bruce Willis’ career. For many Alan Rickman is the favorite character from the movie.
Harry Potter (2001-2011)
Alan Rickman had a central role in the Harry Potter series which he developed after every movie. His character, professor Snape was one of the most exciting characters to follow throughout the series. That was mainly because of his character arch and how Rickman pulled it. In other words, an amazing display of talent and mastery of the art of acting.
