The art scene in Nigeria has grown considerably over the last few years. The capital, Lagos has emerged as a rich hotspot for galleries showcasing contemporary art. Traditional craft, and 20th century modernism is particularly on the rise. While there is still limited access to opportunities and resources for artists, many have come together to plan their own exhibitions. They sell their art independently, and use social platforms to give their art an audience. Omenka Gallery
In 2003 Nigerian artist Oliver Enwonwu opened the Omenka Gallery in Lagos. The gallery is situated in Enwonwu’s house. In this way It offers a unique way to experience the artist’s work on a more personal level. The gallery showcases emerging and established artists in various media, including Abass Kelani, Cedric Nunn, Dominique Zinkpè, Ima Mfon and Nnenna Okore.
African Artists Foundation (AAF)
This is one of the most popular galleries, not only in Lagos, but in whole of Africa. It is exactly what it’s name suggests and it is supported by many famous artists and curators. It opened it’s doors in 2007 as a non-profit organization in order to support the work of African artists. Ayanfe Olarinde, David Palacios, Johnson Ocheja, Isshaq Ismail are only some of the emerging artists that it hosts. In addition to its exhibitions and workshops, AAF organizes two flagship projects annually – the Lagos Photo Festival, and the National Art Competition – furthering its mission to be a conduit for a new generation of artists.
O’Da Art Gallery
The O’Da Gallery opened in 2020. It’s mission is to support emerging African artists in the whole continent. Moreover, many artists that live around the world have sold their art in this amazing gallery. The people who run it have also supported many designers. In general, O’Da gallery explores a wide range of themes such as; identity, technology, political commentary, social consciousness and environmental change.
NIKE ART GALLERY
Founded in 2009 by Nigerian textile artist, Nike Okundaye, Nike Art Gallery aims to transform the hitherto neglected arts and culture industry in Nigeria and to ensure an enabling environment for the growth of African cultural heritage. The five-story building is located in Lekki Peninsula and holds over 8000 works of art, largely Nigerian and African, as well as Nike’s second textile museum. The gallery is a well-known cultural spot and tourist destination in West Africa.
National Museum of Lagos
The National Museum of Lagos holds some of the most fascinating objects telling the story of Nigerian art and culture. It is strategically located in the heart of the city and successfully promoting the country’s rich heritage to the rest of the world. Visitors will be able to explore the masterpieces and the unique cultures of over 300 communities in Nigeria.
