Anne Imhof was born in 1978 in Giessen, Germany. She is a visual artist, choreographer and performance artist. She works between Frankfurt and Paris. Αfter graduating from Städelschule, in Frankfurt, in 2012, she started gradually her international career. We could refer to her performance in 2014 Carré d’Art, Musée d’art contemporain, Projectroom, Nîmes, where she first decisively presented, what can be characterized as art beyond mere performance.
To begin with, through her acts, she reconsidered the relationship between pubic, event and documentation. In 2015 she entered MoMA for her performance DEAL. In DEAL, she researched in the psychical, legal and illegal boundaries of a deal. 2016 was quite determining for her. Her performances Angst I, II, III in Basel, Berlin and Montreal gave to her international acclaim and awards. Angst refers to the monstrosity of Nazi Germany, as well as the 2017 FAUST.
Anne Imhof’s FAUST, was the official representation of Germany for the 57th Venice Biennale. Imhof won the prestigious Golden Lion award, which is similar with this in cinema and considered the analogue of Golden Palm award for artists. In 2017, she also won the Absolut Art Award. Absolut Vodka in the past had collaborations with very well known-artists like Andy Warhol, Keith Harring, Rosemarie Trockel and Damien Hirst. Inhof started to be famous and commercial, if we also consider her 2022 collaboration with Balenciaga in Paris Fashion week. She also won the BEN award as ‘’Most Important Artist’’ in 2020, and the Binding –Kulturpreis in 2022.
After 2017 and Venice Biennale, Imhof started to be a regular exhibitor in the most well-known museums in the world. In 2019 her performance sex, has been part of the program of Tate modern London and Art Institute of Chicago (also in 2020 at Castello di Rivolli in Turin and in 2021 in National art Gallery of Copenhagen ).
In 2021, she had the whole palais de Tokyo in Paris, in a form of white card (carte blanche). She presented a multi laired installation, Video Art, Performance, Dance, Choreography even fashion show called Natures Mortes. In 2022-2023 (January) Stedelikj Musem Amsterdam provided her 1,100 m2 for her performance youth which also combined many elements. This has been also done in her performance Avatar II in Sprüth Magers, London.
Anne imhof is one of the most recognized voices of the new generation of artists. The elements of nihilism, Greek mythology and underground culture shape a word at its end with no meaning and purpose as the general description of Youth mentions. With Eliza Douglas as main heroine, the muse of Balenciaga, put in a dystopian labyrinth this performance is not only obscure but also glamorous.
