It is that time of the year when the festive spirit inspires us all, even the film industry. There have been some amazing films over the years, which not only depicted Christmas, but also set up festive standards. Family time, redemption, magic, forgiveness and kindness are only some of them. This is a list with 5 of the most famous and best Christmas movies – ranked. We will try to be objective and rank them by popularity.
#5-A Christmas Story (1983)

This movie is about 9-year-old Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) who sets out to acquire the best Christmas present ever: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot Range Model air rifle. Bob Clark’s 1983 comedy, still finds its way to televisions all over the world every year. Full of comedy, but nice nice, tender moments too, it is a film that you can watch every year around the holidays. And it stands very well during the years as one of the top Christmas movies ever made.
#4-Elf (2003)

A perfect theatrical and cinematic movie, Elf is the perfect Christmas eggnog. This film still has an appeal to all ages, young and old. This is the reason that people still enjoy it to this day. Humor, amazing costumes and refreshing acting make this movie a good old classic. Buddy the Elf, who leaves the North Pole to find his biological father, finds himself in NYC. His sweetness and naïve character are a source of trouble at first, but he finds his place eventually in the complicated and busy life in the Big Apple.
#3-Polar Express

Polar Express became so popular and finds its place in this ranking, because it rides the rails through a child’s heightened reality. It is both mysterious and entertaining. It plays a lot with imagination and children’s expectation of the magic of Christmas. For older viewers it has this deep feeling of nostalgia and reminds of the lost innocence of childhood. The look of the film is extraordinary, a cross between live action and Van Allsburg’s artwork. Robert Zemeckis merges them, using a process called “performance capture,” in which human actors perform the movements which are translated into lifelike animation.
#2-How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

The 1966 animated television special is without a doubt a family holiday favorite, from the whimsical animation to the classic song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” featuring Thurl Ravenscroft’s deep, booming voice. However, the 2000 live-action adaptation is a classic in its own right. Based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 children’s book of the same name, the Ron Howard-directed comedy stars Jim Carrey as the titular green meanie, who’s determined to ruin Christmas for the townsfolk of Whoville. Sure, Carrey’s performance is over the top, but how else would you expect a wannabe Christmas thief like the Grinch to behave? The film is a hilarious, heartwarming and memorable adaptation to Seuss’ beloved tale. One of the top Christmas movies ever.
#1-Home Alone (1990)

For most of us is hard to imagine Christmas without Home Alone. This movie has become synonymous of the festive spirits, family love and what Christmas stands for in general. It is hard to imagine a more memorable movie than this one. This is the reason that we put it on the top of this ranking. In the story, Kevin is left at home as the family vacations and creates a series of booby traps to protect himself from robbers. We will not comment the unrealistic ways in which he fools the robbers. Instead we will accept them and be thankful for the amazing performances, sets and messages that this movie highlights.
